Just Women: Diverting Women from Offending

Just Women is a project that works with women who have come into contact with Criminal Justice Services or are at risk of offending. Many of the women we work with are referred by the Police following their arrest, or by Probation Services if they are serving a Community Order or have been released on Licence. We also deliver our services to women whose circumstances place them at risk of offending or re-offending.

Just Women: Community Rehabilitation

This Community Rehabilitation part of the Just Women project works with women who are serving community orders or have been released from prison on Licence. Participation can be used to meet a court mandated Rehabilitation Activity Requirement

We deliver a suite of interventions to women across Leicestershire which tackle the most common causes of female offending, including specific programmes which address supporting emotional well-being, healthy relationships and practical workshops, such as our:

“This is Me” programme

This is Me, is an empowering psycho-educational programme delivered by NDND, designed for women to explore their emotions and identities over eight sessions. Participants will create a confidential space to address emotional management, self-identity, trauma, and emotional triggers. They will learn techniques to manage emotions, challenge negative thoughts, and connect thoughts with behaviors. The workshop concludes by supporting positive self-perception and celebrating personal growth, equipping women with resilience and confidence.

Our programmes can be delivered to in a group format, which provides the opportunity for women to receive peer support. We also work on a flexible, one-to-one basis with women who are not yet ready for group work.

Commissioned by Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Community Rehabilitation Company. The project is part of a much wider network of commissioned Women’s Services Providers which spans the two regions of East and West Midlands.

Just Women: Out Of Court Resolutions

Our Just Women Out Of Court Resolutions project, focuses on early intervention and diversion, through an Out of Court Resolution which aims to not only reduce women re-offending but to divert women from the courts, probation and ultimately prison.

We act as the single point of contact for all women served with a conditional caution and DA related community resolutions and outcome 22s in Leicestershire.

We assertively engage with women referred to us and work with them to look at their needs and strengths and develop a support plan.

We provide up to 4 one-to-one support sessions to enable the individual to complete the caution, thereby avoiding being sent to court and ending up with a criminal conviction.

As a result of additional charitable funding from the Charles Hayward Foundation we are also able to provide extra intensive support for women who face additional barriers to accessing support.

“You have given me the courage to do things people take for granted. I will always remember you saying to me I am traumatised, not mad like I thought I was. With your continuing help and support I will recover”

“When you walk into the centre it feels like a huge hug. The energy and atmosphere are so lovely, even talking on the phone to staff. It’s a safe space & I can drop my walls”

“My worker has made me feel positive about myself and my future. My worker has opened my eyes to different thoughts and possibilities”

Domestic Abuse Support

Our Domestic Abuse Support Team provide specific practical and emotional support to women in Leicestershire who have been subjected to Domestic Violence or Abuse, or who are currently at risk. Our team is comprised of two Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs) who have received specialist accredited training and hold a nationally recognised qualification in this area of support.

Developed in partnership with Leicestershire Police and the Office for the Police and Crime Commissioner.

Support from Specialist Independent Domestic Violence Advisors

Our IDVAs support women who are at high risk of harm from intimate partners, ex-partners or family members to secure their safety and the safety of their children. Serving as a victim’s primary point of contact, IDVAs normally work with women from the point of crisis to assess the level of risk, discuss the range of suitable options and develop safety plans.

our Independent Domestic Violence Advisors offer a range of support including:
practical steps to protect women and their children
They can make DASH risk assessments
refer to MARAC and other agencies
Supported and co-ordinated referral for specialist services
support women navigating the legal system
help women access emergency accommodation
longer term support when needed

Reach Out Intensive Support Pathway

‘Reach Out’, aims to reduce the number of women reoffending and increase the number diverted from the court, probation and custodial systems, resulting in fewer women serving short custodial sentences and a greater proportion managed successfully in the community.

From October 2021 to Sept 2022 just under 25% of women referred to our service were unable to engage and were referred back to the Police and Probation.

As a consequence, for women serving an Out of Court Resolution, their offence can be escalated to formal court proceedings.

For women on probation it is likely to result in being in breach of their order with the potential to be sent back to court and the associated increased risk of a custodial sentence.

Analysis of this group of women shows that in most cases, this is due to their presenting with a combination of needs which require a more intensive and direct approach.

How ‘reach out’ helps

This Intensive Support Pathway service will compliment our existing Commissioned Rehabilitative Services (CRS) and Out of Court Resolution (OoCR) contracts by using a new approach to supporting women at our existing Women’s Centre and in the wider county.

This approach will focus on women who present a high-risk of reoffending and who face significant barriers to engaging in their community sentences, out of court disposals and post-custodial resettlement.

The new intensive approach will aim to build trusting relationships enabling the removal of barriers to their engagement.
